H-H-H-Holiday Spirit

Oh dear. I fear that last post left some of you thinking that I am a bit of a Scrooge. Which is entirely untrue. In fact just the other day when the kids and Michael wanted to put up the Christmas tree, I did not hide in my room with the lights off and beat my head senselessly, yet rhythmically against the wall. I do so love shopping; just not competition shopping. That's all.

And on to Laynee. Lately the child has been telling everyone that she is 4. "I am 4 years old now, Mom, so I can have Sprite when we go to the store."
Or, "Now when I am 4 I can jump on Daisy and you can't say 'Stop it Laynee.'"
And, "Tell Dad that I am 4 so he will play the shoot the deer game with me."
In fact, I came home from being away last week to find Michael in a state of utter confusion. "Laynee's still 3, right?"
"Yes," I answered cautiously, not sure if the reason he was asking had anything to do with my nightmare from the night before being acted out in an unconscious, real life way, therefore damaging permanently his memory. (Let's just say that it involved a large frying pan, some butter on the floor and my maniacal alter ego laying in wait for precisely the right moment.)
"She's still 3, why do you ask?"
"Well, she just told me you told her she was 4."
He must have seen the look on my face that said he had been scammed by a toddler because in his defense he said, "What? She was very convincing!"

The other day, after I had taken the big kids to school and before Michael had gone to work, he sat to eat his breakfast and was watching The Bug and I play. We have some 'Merry Christmas' blocks and I was going through the letters with her trying to get her to recognize some of them. We had assigned the H to Hunter, the C to Corrine, the M to Mom and the S to Ssssssss. I held up the Hunter block and asked, "What letter is this?" She appropriately told me it was Hunter. But then when I asked what sound it made and what other words started with that letter, she looked a bit perplexed. So Michael and I gave her a few hints. "H-h-h-happy. H-h-h-hot. H-h-h-house. H-h-h-horsey sauce." I think she got it and was understanding what we were getting at because her eyes got all big and you could literally see the light bulb hanging over her head switch on. (She happened to be standing in front of the strobe light that goes off when it feels a beat. What? So we have a strobe light in our front room. You should see our family night activities.) It was like she couldn't get her H word out fast enough."H-h-h-Christmas!!"
Well done, little one. Well done. She's so smart.
