Not for the faint of Heart (I couldn't resist)
Pun totally intended. This, my friends, is an elk heart. Michael had gone hunting with his friend, Tod. It was Tod's tag but Michael was given the heart and liver as a nice consolation prize. So, for Family Night, we decided (completely impromptu) to learn the anatomy of an elk heart. I thought I would share with the internet our findings. Isn't this a very fitting post seeing as Valentine's Day is just around the corner? He he.
Yes, that would be Hunter, man-handling the elk heart.
Hunter's finger is shoved into the Superior Vena Cava. For more information on how the heart works, go here. I was completely fascinated and followed each link until my brain was full. I have always been in awe of how the human body works, and the elk heart is very similar to a human heart, only just a tad bigger, and it's in the body of an elk.
It was so cool to run the water through the Superior Vena Cava and watch as the water came out different arteries. We did the same thing with each hole we found until we were satisfied with how the water flowed.
Please note: I did not touch the heart. It's one thing to look and go, "Oooh, now make the water splurt from that hole!" and a totally different thing to actually handle it and be able to sleep at night.
We didn't do much with the liver; that was boring. No holes to run water through.
In case you're wondering; Yes. Michael did eat some of it. I'll admit, I had a teeny tiny bite. (Don't you judge me!) It was not the most delicious thing ever. It kindof resembled a rubber band fried in flour and seasoned salt. But Michael and Hunter decided it was yummy. Well, yummy enough for 6 bites.

I feel a little weird in my back for some reason just looking at the heart, but it's really cool. It would be down right AWESOME if I was a guy/boy, but I can appreciate the cool factor from across the screen... Far, far away. Just trying to imagine what it felt like makes my back feel weird again... And imagining what it tasted like (invisioning your description on my tongue) makes me have the little gag reflex and my neck kind of shiver to the side... I will not judge you for trying. In fact, in my book, that's major wife and mommy points! Go you! :0)
Wow I don't think I could ever get Ashley to eat let alone touch the heart. Although if Corrine were there she might be able to persaude her cousin.
I see you are a doula AND in Oregon! I wish I had known you before I had my last baby. :) I love the process of birth and have always thought being a professional coach would be so fulfilling.
Thanks for your thoughts on my blog. It is so nice to hear from another understanding soul.
